The BIA Colombo's premier Airport is to be further developed. A 150-room star class hotel costing US $ 20 million is to be added to the airport. Expansion and modernisation of the BIA commenced in 1994.The fist phase of the project was completed in 1998. Plans are underway to lay asphalt on Taxiways, extend the apron, construction of a piper with 8 gate lounges and boarding bridges and improve Air navigation systems and cargo facilities. The Airport and Aviation Services Ceylon ltd. administers operations of the BIA. Sri Lanka's geographic location is ideally suited to emerge as a major aviation hub in the region. The amount of International air cargo transportation by private sector companies in Sri Lanka is on the rise. Presently domestic flight operations are affected due to the current security situation in the country. It is expected that the improvements would benefit the passengers both local and foreign as well as investors to look at Sri Lanka as a lucrative business place. Sri Lanka is also looking into the possibilities of adopting the open sky policy. Legislation is underway to transform the Department of Civil Aviation to an Authority.
