Indian police used force to break a protest march in Chennai against the recent proscription of the LTTE by the British government. Reports say Friday's protest was organized by the Tamil National Movement led by Pala Nedumaran. The leader of the Tamil National movement had attempted to hand a petition to the Deputy British High Commissioner in Chennai. It is reported the British diplomat was not available to receive or acknowledge the petition. Tamil National Movement has called for the boycotting of goods in India manufactured in Britain or with British collaboration. About seven hundred activists of the Tamil ultra-national movement were arrested following the demonstration on Friday. Meanwhile in Gingee Ramachandran a member of India's ruling coalition is demanding that New Delhi lift its ban on the Sri Lankan Tamil tigers. The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam LTTE was banned in India in the early 1990s following the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi a former Premier of India.LTTE is among 21 organisations proscribed by the British Government under the UK Terrorism Act 2000.The LTTE is also banned in the US.
