Colombo Dockyard Limited (CDL), one of the largest blue chips in Sri Lanka, was awarded the National Productivity Award for the year 2000. CDL is acknowledged as the most dynamic and comprehensive ship repairing facility in South Asia. “The significance of the award highlights the tremendous performance of the company that was running at a loss in 1993. But amidst all the war and its effects, CDL has managed to excel in its services contributing to the economic growth of the country,” said Managing Director, Dr. S. M. B. Obeysekara. “CDL's collaboration with Onomichi Dockyard Limited of Japan has also contributed a lot for the improved performance which has given way for this prestigious award,” he said. The company received the award for its mobilization of the skilled work force, management, customer feedback and its quality of service. CDL is a ISO 9001 company. The fully integrated, ultra-modern ship repairing facility is strategically located within the Port of Colombo. Around half the repairs are done for clients in Germany, UK, Scandinavia and India. “More than 50% of turnover comes from India,” Dr. Obeysekara said. CDL constructs vessels for commercial applications, and handles ship repairs and ship-building for the Sri Lanka Navy.
