Sri Lankan neurologists win a prestigious award

A team of Sri Lankan neurologists has won a prestigious award for its scientific paper on clinical audit of stroke care.

The presentation was made at the Fourth   World Stroke Congress held in Melbourne, Australia.

Delegates from countries such as United States, United Kingdom, Australia and Japan were present at the conference.

The Sri Lankan team comprised Dr. Udaya Ranawaka, Dr. A.T Alibhay, Dr. S.Puvanendiran and Dr. Jagath Wijesekara of the Institute of Neurology, National Hospital of Colombo. 

The Stroke Unit at Colombo's National Hospital is the only one of its kind in Sri Lanka.

Over 300 stroke patients have been treated since its launch in July 1998. The main feature of the unit is the presence of a multi-disciplinary stroke team. There are in this team, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists neurologists, rehabilitation physician, nursing staff and a social services officer.
