Sri Lanka to set up Civil Aviation Authority
[06 Apr 2001]

Legislation is under preparation to transform the Department of Civil Aviation to a Civil Aviation Authority. The Legal draftsman is awaiting the approval of the Attorney General to submit the bill to parliament.

The proposed Authority would address matters pertaining mainly to the safety of civil aviation. It would also be empowered to recruit resource personnel as pilots, navigators, air traffic controllers, aerodrome and airworthiness inspectors, security personnel etc.

Sri Lanka is the Signatory of the Chicago Convention of the International Civil Aviation Organization of 1944. The developments would be perquisite to have the resource personal to handle different categories of modern aircraft. The geographic location of Sri Lanka is ideally suited to develop the island as leading aviation hub in the region.

Civil Aviation Department's Assistant Director Operations, H.M.C Nimalsiri said that the existing Air Navigation Act of 1950 would be replaced and staff capabilities would be enhanced on the recommendations of the audit conducted by the ICAO in February 1997. He said that the government had granted a sum of US $ 1.8 million for the project.
