'Saroja' bags best film award
[06 Apr 2001]

'Saroja' - The moving story of two little girls one Sinhala and the other Tamil, who show a new dimension to life in a multi-ethnic society, bagged the award for the 'Best Film' at the Presidential Film Awards 2000 ceremony.

The award was of special significance as the government announced earlier this week that details and dates for peace talks would be made public by the end of the month.

The film, 'Rajya Sevaya Pinisai' (On State Service) - the story of a philandering politician, also won several awards.

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, who presided over the ceremony at the President's House in Colombo, said that the National Policy on the Cinema was formulated by the government to ensure that the local film industry would be among the best in Asia, and be symbolic of our culture and in consonance with modern times.
