The Norwegian Ambassador, Jon Westborg is in the rebel held territory in northern Sri Lanka this weekend. Today's Island newspaper reports he is to meet with LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran in the Wanni jungles. The report quoting defence and political sources said that the envoy was expected to discuss a wide range of issues with the LTTE leadership. The Norwegian government is acting as facilitator to bring the Sri Lanka Government and the rebel LTTE to the negotiating table to end the 18-year war in the northern and eastern parts of Sri Lanka. The visit is believed to be part of the process to arrange peace talks between the two sides. Sri Lankan Foreign Minister, Lakshman Kadirgamar said last week that details and dates for the talks would be announced before the end of the month.
