Minister Richard Pathirana yesterday called on the Chair to take stern action against members who do not safeguard the sanctity of Parliament. The Minister, who holds the portfolios of Public Administration, Home Affairs and Administration Reforms, said that the powers vested in the Chair should be fully exercised and the dignity of the house maintained. He said that powers vested in the Speaker of the House should be used and those responsible for uncivilized behavior punished. The Minister's call came a day after an unsavoury verbal duel between government and opposition members saw school children wailing in the Public Gallery. Horrified by the uncouth behavior of the elected representatives, the petrified children ran helter skelter and had to be calmed by the Police.
