Foreign Minister elected IOR-ARC Vice Chairman

Minister of Foreign Affairs Lakshman Kadirgamar was elected Vice Chairman of the Indian Ocean Rim Association for Regional Cooperation (IOR-ARC) at the Organisation’s Third Regular Ministerial Meeting.

The concept of promoting regional cooperation among Rim States of the Indian Ocean emerged in 1995. The IOR-ARC was formally set up in in 1997. Sri Lanka has been a member of this Association since its inception.

The Association has a tri-partite structure comprising the government sector, business sector and academia. Sri Lanka is closely associated with the activities of all three sectors.

Sri Lanka’s offer to host the next Meeting of the Council of Ministers was welcomed and arrangements would be made to hold the meeting in Colombo in 2003.
