Norwegian Ambassador briefs President and Foreign Minister on Wanni talks
[09 Apr 2001]

The Norwegian Ambassador Jon Westborg briefed President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunge and Foreign Affairs Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar after his visit to the Wanni jungles for talks with the LTTE.

The Norwegian Ambassador and the Second Secretary Tomas Stangeland travelled to the area of Mallavi on Friday.  After ten hours of discussions with the LTTE political wing leader, P Thamilchelvam they returned to Colombo on Saturday night.

A news release issued by the Royal Norwegian Embassy stated, "The discussions revisited some important issues also raised in the past, and the LTTE expressed concern that negotiations between the conflicting parties should take place in an environment absent of hostilities and present of respect and understanding.  Norway will continue its consultation between the Government of Sri Lanka and the LTTE."

The LTTE website, Tamil Net said that LTTE have imposed new pre-requisites for peace talks.  The abolition of the ban imposed by the government, removal of restrictions on goods sent to North and recognition as a representative Organisation of Tamils, were the newly imposed pre-requisites.

Foreign Ministry sources said that the official response of the Sri Lankan government will be issued after proper consultation and consideration.
