"With the modern glass manufacturing plant, Sri Lanka will save Rs. 150 million ($ 1.7 million) in foreign exchange of and earn an additional Rs. 100 million ($ 0.87 million) from new exports," said Dr. Bandula Perera, Managing Director of Sri Lanka's sole container glass manufacturer, Ceylon Glass Company Ltd. Ceylon Glass Company (CGC) is the largest glass producer in Sri Lanka. Speaking about the expansion project, Dr. Bandula Perera said that this was not just an installation of an ordinary plant, but an embarkation into "new technology" that would allow the country to manufacture "green bottles" for the first time. He said that green bottles, which needs a special technology to be manufactured are imported to Sri Lanka from European countries at a very high cost. "This is the first time that this technology will be arriving in an Asian country," he said. Indian glass giant Gujarat Glass Ltd acquired CGC in August 1999.
