At least two passengers were injured in an emergency evacuation of UL 557 just prior to take-off at Colombo Airport, Wednesday morning. The emergency evacuation was triggered by a smoke alarm. The flight, which was scheduled to depart at 5.55 A.M. local time, was delayed by five hours. One passenger identified as 28 year old, Kattula Sammaiah from Hyderabad, India, is warded at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the National Hospital in Colombo after surgery following injuries sustained in the evacuation. Dr. Rani Fernando, Acting Director of the Hospital said that Kattula Sammaiah was still unconscious twelve hours later. Another female passenger admitted to the Base Hospital Negombo, is believed to have sustained serious injuries. Among the injured was an eight-year old Sri Lankan girl. A 30-year old female passenger suffered a leg injury. A spokesman for the Airline, Victor Abeysekara said there were 141 passengers on board flight UL557. He said that four passengers had sustained injuries and were treated at the National Hospital in Colombo. Two of the injured were Sri Lankans while the others were a German and an Indian, he said. By evening the aircraft was still being checked and the reason for the alarm triggering off was yet to be established according to Manuela Motha, Sri Lankan Airlines’ Senior Media Relations Executive.
