State
Institutions to be restructured - CBK [12
Apr 2001]
President
Chandrika Kumaratunga earlier this week invited senior customs men to her
office for a briefing. She told them import duties and customs levies had
the potential bringing in an additional 58 Million Dollars into the state coffers.
If corruption is
eliminated in revenue making state institutions it would be possible to reduce
interest rates and bridge the budget deficit.
President
Kumaratunga said plans are underway to restructure government institutions
and to minimize red tape. She said officers would be judged and rewarded on
performance alone.
The
President assured the customs men she will not let honest officers to be
taken captive by Mafia types who engage in all types of
corruption and malpractice.
She
pledged her Government would do everything possible to provide maximum
protection to officers who perform their duties honestly without fear or
favour.
