Sri Lankan Airlines will pay compensation to the family of twenty eight year old, Kattula Sammaiah from Hyderabad, India, who died after being injured in the emergency tarmac evacuation of a Sri Lankan Airlines flight at Colombo Airport last week. The compensation will be in keeping with industry norms. The airline said today that it was making all arrangements to transport Mr. Kattula's remains to India. Dr. Rani Fernando, Acting Director of the Hospital said that Kattula Sammaiah did not regain consciousness after he underwent emergency surgery to arrest inter-cranial haemorrhaging. Sri Lankan Airlines' Senior Media Relations Executive, Manuela Motha said her company was deeply saddened by the death of Mr. Kattula Sammaiah. The aircraft was taxiing for departure on a scheduled flight to Frankfurt April 11, when a fire alarm prompted an emergency evacuation of all passengers as a precautionary measure. Mr. Kattula was critically injured in the evacuation process. The outcome of the investigations by the airline into the cause of the fire alarm being triggered is yet unknown. Three other passengers sustained injuries in the evacuation. There were 141 passengers onboard at the time of the evacuation. Earlier, on April 13, Sri Lankan Airlines flew into Colombo, Mrs. Sammaiah to visit her injured husband in hospital.
