Journalist caught in crossfire

Britain’s Sunday Times journalist Marie Colvin.

Marie Colvin, a journalist working for Britain’s Sunday Times newspaper was wounded in an encounter between the armed forces and the LTTE in Vavuniya.

The incident occurred hours before a government cessation of hostilities against the LTTE was to end. The truce was declared for five days during the traditional New Year observed by both the Sinhala and Tamil communities.

She had an injury to her left eye and was airlifted to Colombo. A doctor at the State-run Eye Hospital in Colombo said today that she had undergone eye surgery and been transferred to a private hospital in the city.

In a statement issued today, the government said that Marie Colvin had not obtained permission to enter or visit uncleared areas.
