17th century Dutch canal network around Colombo to be restored
[20 Apr 2001]

The Government has called for proposals to set up water sports and other leisure activities in Colombo's Canal network built by the Dutch. The project will restore the waterways now fallen into disuse. These were built in the 17th Century when the Dutch ruled Sri Lanka.

Deputy General Manager of the government's land reclamation authority, the Sri Lanka Land Reclamation and Development Corporation, V. Gunaratne said that Expressions of Interest have been called.

The development of the canal network is linked to the establishment of more leisure areas in Colombo.

Gunaratne said that people were interested in having more recreation areas in Colombo and large areas are idling which could be developed for recreational activities.

About 35 km of canal have already been rehabilitated and around 690 acres of land has been set apart as retention areas. He said that such developments would also prevent land encroachments.

Boat riding, cabanas, nature trails, bird parks, observation towers, children entertainment centers, amusement parks, swan rides, roller coaster and other leisure pursuits are intended to be setup with private sector participation.
