Strict laws to prevent import of genetically modified food
[23 Apr 2001]

Sri Lanka will impose strict regulations banning the import of genetically modified raw and processed food.

The laws come into effect on May 1 2001.

The Food Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Health, which recommended the banning of these food items, has also called for certain food items to be imported only on a licence.

These food items include soya products, tomatoes, potato products, bakers and brewers yeast, cheese, beet sugar, corn or maize.

Importers of these products will have to submit a certificate from the exporting government's health authority confirming that the products have not been genetically modified.

Dr A M L Beligaswatte, Director General of Health Services said the ban would continue until the ongoing debate in the western countries over the safety of GM food is resolved.
