LTTE ends self-proclaimed truce
[24 Apr 2001]

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) has decided not to extend its unilateral cease-fire due to expire at midnight Tuesday. [24th April]

The LTTE’s month-long unilateral truce was declared on Christmas Eve (December 24) last year and was extended thrice since then. The LTTE said in a press release issued from its headquarters in Vanni, that it ended the cease-fire because the government “ refused to reciprocate positively”. However a Defence Ministry spokesman said, the LTTE repeatedly violated their self-proclaimed truce over 200 times.

The Commissioner General of Essential Services told the PRIU today that the government of Sri Lanka has taken every possible step to despatch the essential goods to the civilians living in rebel-held areas. Supplies to the north were doubled especially during the Sinhala and Hindu New Year.
