The Ratmalana domestic aerodrome is to be redeveloped at a cost of Rs. 880 million. This airport which was operational since WW1 is to be transformed into a joint civil and military airport. The planned infrastructure improvements are addition of New Navigational services complexes, terminal buildings, aprons, 100 housing units, a domestic passenger terminal, new taxiways, and public car parks. The existing terminal building at the Ratmalana Airport is over 50 years. "The development of this Airport was a long felt need," said Aviation instructor Captain Romesh Mendis. The Ratmalana terminal once developed will enhance the country's economic potential with increased domestic flights. The planned new facilities at Ratmalana will be a boon to the many qualified pilots, engineers' technicians and other aviation personnel to gain experience.
