Sri Lanka's premier GSM cellular provider Dialog GSM, won this year's GSM World Award under the community service category, for its unique contribution to change lives of less fortunate and marginalised segments of the society. There were 200 applications from GSM operators worldwide. Dialog GSM won the award for its trust fund called "Change" set up in 1999, where the subscribers donate 0.5% of their cellular bill in support of Government approved charities. The subscriber donations are then matched and doubled by Dialog before disbursing the funds. V. Mothilal De Silva, Head of Corporate Planning of Dialog GSM said that "consistency" and "commitment" of the program were the core features that made them winners. "'Change' is a unique community service program undertaken by a private sector company to play a key role in alleviating the hardships of the less fortunate in the country," he said. "The Trust Fund supports the National Child Protection Authority, the Jaipur Foot Program and the Ceylon School for the Deaf and Blind. This is a well formulated program and is not just a mere 'donation'," he said. De Silva also said that around Rs. 1 million had been disbursed during the last 2 years. The Change Trust Fund is administered by a Board of nine trustees, three of whom are subscribers and the others employees of Dialog GSM.
