Catholic Bishops make historic visit to jungle shrine
[25 Apr 2001]

A group of ten Bishops from the Catholic Bishops Conference of Sri Lanka made a historic visit to the Madhu Church in the Wanni yesterday to pray for "peace" in the country.

"The Bishops will be visiting Madhu together for the first time in the history," said Rev. Father Neil Karunaratne, Assistant Secretary of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Sri Lanka.

He said the main reason for the visit was to thank Our Lady for the safe passage of the Marudha Madhu statue, which was brought to the South last month for the first time in history.

The statue has been enshrined in Madhu in the Wanni since the time the country was under the rule of the Dutch and Catholics were facing persecution.

He said that the Bishops would also be visiting the refugee camps in the Wanni to show their "goodwill". They are expected to return tonight.
