The delegation of the Chinese Buddhist Congress which arrived in Sri Lanka recently met Prime Minister Rathnasiri Wickramanayake in Colombo. They held extensive talks and proposed to create a Buddhist Foundation to conduct combined programmes with the participation of other Buddhist countries. The possibility of launching a Buddhist Religious Exchange Programme between Sri Lanka and China as an initial step of re-establishing Theravada Buddhism in China was also taken into consideration. A spokesman for the Prime Minister's Office told PRIU that a Buddhist museum will be established in Sri Lanka to safeguard the world's Buddhist heritage. Another outcome of this meeting was to set up a Buddhist research centre in Sri Lanka with funds granted by the Chinese government. The leader of the delegation, Thaw Shu Ren, said that this visit to Sri Lanka revived the age-old ties between the two countries which dates back to the period of Bhikkhu Fa-Hien.
