Doors open for peace not for division - CBK
[25 Apr 2001]

President Kumaratunga is seen awarding a Gallantry Award to a war hero.

Speaking the day after the LTTE announced it would end its self-proclaimed ceasefire the Sri Lankan President said her government would not shut the doors for peace talks. President was the Chief Guest at yesterday’s Armed Forces Gallantry Awards ceremony held to honour Sri Lanka’s war heroes.

President Kumaratunga said, “ With an unprincipled terrorist organisation such as the LTTE, I will not like to comment on peace prospects too prematurely but we are hopeful of achieving something tangible and constructive in the coming months.”

The President said, “I would do the utmost to address the injustices caused to the minority ethnic groups in the North and the East. She said, “This could be achieved through the new constitution, which ensures rights of all ethnic groups”.

Kumaratunga also stated that as long as her government is in power she would not entertain the idea of division of the country.
