The Galle Port yielded a record profit of 111.5 million rupees ($1.3m) for the year 2000 compared to 35.1 million rupees the previous year, the Ministry of Port Development said in a press release. “The Galle Port was able to handle only 59 ships in 1994 and by 2000 the number increased to 176 ships,” the Ministry said. The Ministry attributes last year’s huge profits to the increase in ship arrivals at the port after two new cement plants were commissioned there. The natural harbour in Galle, in the southwest of Sri Lanka has a long maritime history. Among the Asian ports of the United Dutch East India Company (Verenigde Oost Indische Compagnie, or VOC), Galle was second only to Batavia (now Jakarta).
