The Government has decided to hold the main Vesak celebrations on the 8th of May in the Eastern City of Trincomalee. Located 257 Km east of the Capital, Tricomalee was named the 'Universal City of Peace' last year by UNESCO. The choice of Trincomalee was perhaps because of its healthy ethnic mix and the relative peace experienced by its citizens. Trincomalee boasts of one of the world's most beautiful natural deep water harbours. This eastern city is also known the world over for its exotic beaches and natural hot-water springs. The Ancient Dutch Fort, 300-ft drop to the ocean known as the 'Lovers Leap', and the Koneshwaran Temple atop the 'Swami Rock' are famous landmarks of Trincomalee. Main Vesak program would be held in Tricomalee with the participation of all ethnic communities under the auspices of Ministry of National Integration and Ethnic affairs. Religious observances and Shramadana campaigns (Community service projects) are been organized along with government and social services organizations. Minister in charge Athauda Senevratne told media men today "we as a nation have failed to build a national identity even after 53 years of independence." Seneviratne who till recently the Chief Minister of the Sabaragamuwa Province said the Provincial Council system was introduced to the country with the view to devolving power to the regions. The Minister said if we were to live in harmony we need to treat all citizens alike without discrimination.
