Political conspiracy behind Wanni
military setback [25 Nov 1999]
-
- COLOMBO, 25 NOV. In view of the
UNP leader's statement on handing over the NorthEast to the LTTE
for a period of 2 years and the traitorous links between certain
military officers and the UNP, the CID is currently conducting
investigations into an alleged conspiracy to destabilise the
military offensive in the Wanni.
-
- Preliminary
investigations have revealed a possible link between both parties
and the LTTE. Retired Major General Lucky Algama has already been
intensively questioned by the CID due to his presence in the Wanni
region shortly before the military setback occurred.
-
- Major General Algama,
former DIG Premadasa Udugampola and several retired military top
brass are reported to have met frequently at the UNP headquarters
Sirikotha. Defence observers state that the secret meetings
between Jayalath Jayawardena and Karikalan of the LTTE in the
Wanni jungles could also be related to the plot.
-
- Meanwhile, the CID is
questioning several army officers both retired and in active
service, and two high ranking officials have already been sent on
compulsory leave. Further investigations are being carried out
regarding a coup plot.
-
- Meanwhile, the leader of
the UNP, Ranil Wickremasinghe stated at a press conference
yesterday that his party had nothing to do with the military
setback in the Wanni.
