President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, issuing a message for New Year called upon the people to ensure peace, progress, brotherhood, mutual understanding and trustd.  The full text of her message is as follows:

     I have received a rare honour of wishing all Sri Lankans at this rare and historic moment of a dawn of a new millenium.

     The new millenium dawn marks a special juncture in history. We have come to an appropriate moment to ensure peace, progress, brotherhood, mutual understanding and trust.

     The need has arisen for Sri Lankans to work together to mould their future from lessons learnt from their past while putting their unpleasant history behind them. It is the duty trust upon us by history for the benefit of our future generations.

     There will not be a more appropriate moment than this to carry out this task. Therefore it is the duty of all of us to act without delay and with determination while spreading thoughts of compassion, so that everyone living in this country will be able to fulfill their new aspirations.

     A happy New Year to you all.
