Y2K: Sri Lanka safe, monitoring continues
[3 Jan 2000]

The Event Management Centre of the CINTEC has confirmed the absence of any Y2K related problems in Sri Lanka after the roll over to Year 2000. Chairman of CINTEC Professor V.K. Samaranayake said that despite positive responses they have received, constant monitoring would be done and contingency plans would be implemented for unforeseen breakdowns. Especially since today is the day where most of the computers would be switched on.
Professor V.K. Samaranayake also sent out a message of caution saying that apart from Sri Lanka's Y2K compatibility, the fact that Year 2001 is a leap year may not have taken in to consideration by some software programmers.
However, it has been reported that there had been no incident in significant areas such as Aviation, Sea Port, Airports, Telecommunication, Electricity and Health including the Banking Sectors. It has been estimated that Sri Lanka has spent more than 30 million US dollars on Y2K compatibility.
