Religious leaders seek peace in North
[3 Jan 2000]

In response to President Chandrika Banadaranaike's call to LTTE Leader Velupillai Prabhakaran, the Organization of Religious Dignitaries consisting of two members is currently in the North to attain the response of the LTTE regarding peace negotiations. Leader of the Organization Ven. Prof. Kamburugamuwe Thera said that the main purpose of the delegation is to bring about the LTTE to the negotiating table.

President Kumaratunga has laid the ground for peace talks in her appeal to all political parties and the LTTE in supporting her govt to end the war in her address to the nation at the swearing in ceremony at Temple Trees on December 22. However, the religious dignitaries are of the view that the path for further progress would depend on the outcome of their talks with the LTTE. Their effort would be to make the LTTE see the criteria for peace without the issue of a separate state. They were also aware of the significance of UNP's involvement in this effort to achieve peace.

The religious dignitaries representing all major religions in Sri Lanka consisting Jaffna Bishop Rev. Father Thomas Saundranayagam and Mannar Bishop Rev. Father Rayappu Joseph is to present the outcome of the visit to the President Chandrika Banadarnaike Kumaratunga and all political parties.
