In a three hour discussion on Monday night, President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga urged the UNP to at least support the peace process of the government before concentrating on setting up a national government. The need to join the government to reach a consensus on the national issue was also highlighted by her. President Kumaratunga has already called the UNP to join her government to support the peace effort in the inauguration speech on December 22. However, in response to President's invitation UNP leader Mr. Ranil Wickremasinghe has mentioned in a joint Parliamentary and Working Committee meeting that the UNP was willing to support the government if positive proposals were presented.
