Suspected gunman had visited Kumar Ponnambalam at his home
[6 Jan 2000]

Police sources have revealed that the suspected gunman had visited Mr. Kumar Ponnambalam yesterday in the morning at his home at Queen's Road. The suspect had been accompanying Mr. Ponnambalam in the Benz car while the Tamil leader was driving. Later Mr. Ponnambalam was found dead inside the car with gun shot wounds in his head and neck. Mrs. Kumar Ponnambalam had told the Daily News that a man named "Shanthan" had called at the politician's residence at 10 am and had left with him. The absence of an eyewitness had made the investigations difficult. However, an employee of Gladstone Thomas has told the police that a fair person had come to the house yesterday morning and had wanted to meet Mr. Ponnambalam. Mr. Ponnambalam after a brief discussion with "Shanthan" had driven off with the stranger.

Police sources said they were unable to find out why Mr. Ponnambalam had deviated from the route and turned into Ramakrishna Lane where we was shot. However, it was possible he was taking a short cut to avoid heavy traffic, heading towards Brighton Hotel which he owned. Police sources have also told the Daily Mirror that blood on head of the victim had dried up and that the killing had had taken place at least an hour before the police arrived suggesting the use of a silencer since no one had heard the gunshots.

Two empty cartridges of 9mm browning pistol were found near the right side of the car. He was shot at a very close range from outside the car, security officials said. Police also suspect whether the crime had been committed by an accomplice who had awaited for Mr. Ponnambalam at Ramakrishna Lane.

Mr. Kumar Ponnambalam son of late Mr. G. G. Ponnambalam, was a father of two children, a son and a daughter. According to his son, Gajan, his father had received death threats almost every day, The Daily Mirror stated.

The Wellawatte police are still conducting investigations.
