False propaganda by the Free Media Movement [12, Jan 2000] The Free Media Movement is attempting to give a completely distorted interpretation to the discussion held on the 3rd January by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, Presidential Secretariat announcement stated. A special request was made from the people of this country as well as the international community not to be misled by false propaganda by some in the Free Media Movement who have attempted to delude the public and the world community. According to the Daily News the communiqué also states that the Free Media Movement have become uneasy in the face of the allegations levelled by the President. The Free Media Movement was accused of not only distorting what the President has said but also for referring to statements which she never made. The President had only stated that the media was a very noble institution and the main responsibility of the media was to bring out the truth with regard to what was happening in the world and to keep the people informed. The Daily News said that the Presidential Secretariat appeals to the people of this country and the world community not to be misled by such propaganda.
The Free Media Movement yesterday rejected all
allegations made against a group of journalists by the government in
relation to a plot and accused the government in attempting to suppress
democracy and media freedom in the country.
