Did LTTE receive Rs.50mn to kill Chandrika? CID investigates

[13, Jan 2000]

Police sources say that the CID is investigating as to whether the LTTE had received millions of rupees from banks owned by some billionaire businessmen to assassinate the President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga on December 18, 1999.

The investigators have questioned a wife of a director of a private bank about granting a Rs.50 million loan to a company owned by her violating the bank's regulations. CID is trying to ascertain whether the money was actually used by the company or diverted to a terrorist organisation.

Meanwhile, a special police team investigating the recent bomb blasts in Colombo has taken into custody a suspected suicide bomber who is alleged to have come to Colombo targeting Government heads. Seven experts from the United States arrived in Sri Lanka last week to assist the CID in the investigations. Nearly 3,000 persons have been already questioned in connection with the Town Hall bomb attack.
