Bomb blast outside PM's office: Police seek medical expertise to identify suicide bomber

[14 Jan 2000]

Parents of the suspected woman suicide bomber received an order from a magistrate yesterday to give blood samples for DNA testing to confirm the relation, police sources said.

The parents after they were arrested from their home at Kolavil, Akkaraipattu last week have told that their daughter, the suicide bomber 22-year old Yashoda Thilakaratnam had left home in July 1998 saying that she wanted to join the Army, The Island said. According to a senior police officer there had been contradictory reports regarding the daughter's departure. He said that the parents had claimed, that two years ago their daughter had been taken away by the LTTE.

The parents have also told the police that the ID card found at the scene was that of their daughter Yashoda but they could not identify the head found at the scene at last Wednesday's bomb explosion near the Prime Minister's office, the Daily Mirror said.

Assistance of the DNA tests has been sought by the police in this investigation to find the identity of the assassin. This is said to be the first time this technique is being used in a terrorist related investigation in Sri Lanka, police sources revealed.

Fort Magistrate A.A.R. Heiyatuduwa has already given directions to present the DNA report on Febryary 3 from investigations in to the bomb explosion, which killed 14 injuring 20 people.
