Sri Lanka contribute soldiers to the U.N. peacekeeping efforts
[17 Jan 2000]

Peacekeepers from four countries including Sri Lankan soldiers met in Nepal yesterday to improve their operations around the world, organisers said.

According to the Daily Mirror they have said that participants at the "South Asian Peace Keeping Multiplatoon Training Event" would seek to enhance the ability of multinational U.N. peacekeeping troops from various regional, cultural, religious and ethnic backgrounds to perform more effectively.

The Royal Nepal Army had said in a statement that the purpose of the event was to increase interoperability and achieve common standards.

The two-week-long course organised by the United Nations with support from the United States and the Royal Nepal Army includes about 200 soldiers from Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka and the United States. The course would be conducted at this picturesque hilltop venue, 50 km(30 miles) north east of the national capital Kathmandu, the Daily News said.

About 80 countries are to be contributing soldiers to the U.N. peacekeeping efforts around the world. A U.N. official also revealed that peacekeeping operations last year cost $1 billion or less than 0.1 per cent of the world's military budget.
