Yesterday at the Lipton Circus in Colombo thousands of workers who demonstrated a protest demanded the removal of certain high officials of government institutions who sabotage the development activities of the PA, Daily News said. According to Provincial Council and local Government Minister Alavi Mowlana who was among the demonstrators said that such officials as heads of state institutions have slowed down development activities depriving the people their benefits under the PA government. He also accused them being supported by certain UNP politicians and stated that no such officials were sacked by the PA government when it came to power in 1994 due to President's kindness towards them to continue in employment. However, it must be stated that the TamilNet has twisted this news in a manner against the government under the heading "Cabinet minister leads protest against Jaffna officials". It further propagates that the workers had called for the removal of some Jaffna top Tamil officials accusing them for acting against the government. According to the Daily News, Minister Alavi Mowlana had clearly stated that the aim of the picketing was to convince the government that it couldn't achieve the proposed development targets unless certain high officials of the government institutions are removed from the present positions. The Island reports that demonstrators were also critical of the press and had also alleged that opposition leader Ranil Wickremasinghe conspiring with the LTTE, which is associated with bombings. They had also condemned the pact between the opposition leader and the LTTE leader carrying placards. According to the Daily News General Secretary of the Ministry Secretaries Association Nihal Wijenayake had urged the government to take prompt action not only against malicious officials but also against those media institutions which are waging a false propaganda war against the government. Among the banners a large one urged President Kumaratunga and Ministers in the government to introduce the package to Parliament, The Island said.
The pressure of the public on the government is
said to have heightened regarding the removal of those government officers
who are engaged in stalling government progress, official sources
revealed.
