Four civilians and a constable were killed injuring 58 others yesterday when LTTE terrorists fired mortars at a police passing out parade of the Police Training College at Morawewa, 230 kilometers (140) miles east of Colombo, officials said. According to the Daily News most of the injured had been recruit's parents or relatives who had come to see the parade. The mortars were fired from the nearby jungle area around 11.00 a.m. The attack was the first on a passing out parade and terrorists appeared to have had prior knowledge of the event, police sources revealed to The Island. About eight rounds of mortars were fired by the terrorists. According to hospital sources the wounded were rushed to Anuradhapura and Trincomalee hospitals. Out of the 58 injured some have sustained serious injuries.
Morawewa is one of the few Sri Lanka Police
Training Centers that conduct para-military training to reserve policemen
deployed both in north and the east, The Island said.
