Search operation in Vavuniya : Five suicide cadres apprehended

[21 Jan 2000]

A search operation was conducted by a special army team in Vavuniya, apprehending 15 LTTEers including five suicide cadres, the DailyMirror revealed yesterday.

There had been bomb specialists, informants and persons who transported explosives to Colombo and Vavuniya from Mannar apart from the suicide cadres. The arrested had been assigned to destroy telecommunication stations, transformers, railway lines and buses, a senior army officer in Vavuniya revealed.

Army had received information about them during the interrogation of two LTTE cadres, arrested in Vavuniya. The questioning had also helped to find 40 kgs of powerful explosives, circuits used to detonate bombs and 90 detonators from Pavakkulam and Nelunkulam. The two cadres had led a series of attacks on security personnel in Mannar and Vavuniya and their arrest had caused the other 15 Tigers to go underground, the officer said.

The Army is conducting operations to detect more suicide kits, explosives and detonators that have been brought to Mannar and Vavuniya from Mullaithivu, the Daily Mirror said.
