Nine hardcore terrorists were arrested in Saturday's search operation conducted during a ten hour curfew in Greater Colombo Division while 45 others have been detained for further questioning, security sources revealed. Two suspected women suicide bombers were among them, said the Daily News. About 3,500 security personnel were engaged in the search operation and Inspector General of Police Lucky Kodituwakku has told The Island that the nine identified terrorists included members of the LTTE suicide unit, bomb unit and informants. Over 2,000 persons that were detained for questioning during the ten-hour curfew in the Kolonnawa Divisional Secretariat area, Wattala, Ja-ela, Negombo and Katana areas have been released. According to CNN news about hundreds of residents had been taken to police stations for screening and questioning. The detained persons were photographed, filmed and paraded before hooded informants, said The Island.
Further, Kelaniya Senior SP Perera has revealed
to the Daily News that a special police team was interrogating the
suspects taken into custody and the persons found innocent would be
released with the least delay. Others would be prosecuted under the law,
he has stated.
