Norwegian delegation holds talks with Tamil parties

[26 Jan 2000]

Members of a Norwegian delegation which arrived in Sri Lanka on Saturday have started talks with Tamil parties yesterday regarding a peace to the 17 year ethnic conflict, diplomatic sources revealed yesterday.

Norwegian State Secretary Leiv Lunde, who holds the rank of deputy minister, and his delegation hosted a reception at the Norwegian Embassy last evening which was attended by representatives of the EPDP, the PLOTE, the TELO and other parties, according to the Midweek Mirror.

TULF general secretary, Mr. R. Sambanthan who met Mr. Lunde at the Norwegian embassy for a 45-minute discussion yesterday, told the Midweek Mirror that talks were successful.
He said "I believe the Norwegians are doing their best to help us along".

"We also discussed the prospects of a consensus between the PA and the UNP and everybody agreed that this was fundamental and necessary in the movement towards peace", he added.

The Norwegians had not disclosed their proposals at last night's reception and Mr. Sambanthan stated that the delegation would not reveal its proposals to anybody. "But they are involved and will continue to be involved and I think it's a good thing" Mr. Sambanthan said. It was agreed at the meeting that the only way to end the war and to bring peace was to involve LTTE in the peace process.

Mr. Lunde is scheduled to meet Acting Foreign Minister Lakshman Kiriella this afternoon to hold discussions regarding the present situation as well as Norway's role in finding a solution. This morning, Mr. Lunde was also to meet UNP Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe.

The delegation had also met representatives of the Sri Lankan Muslim Congress here Monday. Discussions were held in relation to development cooperation.

Norwegian Foreign Minister Knut Vollebcak's visit to Sri Lanka, scheduled earlier this month, was postponed since Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar was out of the country for medical treatment.
