The Criminal Investigation Department arrested a person named "Shantha", who was alleged to have killed Mr. Kumar Ponnambalam, the leader of All Ceylon Tamil Congress, police sources revealed yesterday. According to published reports, the suspect arrested was a wealthy businessman said to match eyewitness descriptions of Mr. Ponnambalam's assassin and who had recently returned to Katharagam. Police sources received other information confirming that Mr. Ponnambalam's assassin had also returned to Katharagama after Mr. POnnambalam's killing. Sources said that sufficient evidence has not been received yet to prove that the arrested suspect is the same person who killed Mr. Ponnambalam. But according to a senior police officer conducting the investigations, the police are confident about finding the required evidence regarding the assassin.
Police sources also said that the arrested
suspect had connections with the underworld and managed to have bribe
police on several occasions.
