Buddhist prelate questions talks with banned terrorist organisation

[27 Jan 2000]

Venerable Aluthgama Dhammananda Nayake Thero of the Malwatte Karake Maha Sangha Sabha at a meeting held in Kandy on Tuesday questioned, how peace talks would be held with the LTTE, which is banned as a terrorist movement.

The meeting was held as a protest against the bomb blast at the Sri Dalada Maligawa, Kandy two years ago. The blast caused severe damages to the venerated shrine.

The meeting was preceded by a marathon peace walk in Kandy to condemn the deadly bomb blast. Several speakers expressed their objections against peace talks with the LTTE saying that the LTTE could not be trusted. They claimed that LTTE was a terrorist organisation that betrays peace by killing innocent civilians.

Venerable Aluthgama Dhammananda Mahopaddya Thera of Malwatte chapter questioned as to how it could be possible to hold peace talks with a terrorist group on which the ban is in force.

Since past experiences had proved that holding peace talks with the LTTE was of no use, the speakers warned against the impending peace talks with the LTTE.
