Ten civilians sentenced to death by the LTTE
[27 Jan 2000]

Ten civilians have been convicted and sentenced to death for having connections with the security forces by a Kangaroo court run by the LTTE, military sources revealed.

The convicted persons were ordered to be shot within the next few days in a public market place, as a warning to others who have connections with the security forces.

Another fourteen civilians were recently executed by the LTTE for having connections with government military personnel. They were shot through the head in the presence of a large number of other civilians at Kokkadicholai, a jungle area near Batticaloa. The announcement of the death sentence was broadcast over a loudspeaker just before the execution.

According to intelligence sources, a large number of civilians thought to be suspected of collaborating with security forces are in the custody of the LTTE.
