UNP boycott ends after one year
[28 Jan 2000]

Sixteen UNP members elected to the North-Western Provincial Council elections, who refrained from taking oaths alleging election malpractices, took oaths before Governor Siripala Jayaweera yesterday ending their year-long boycott.

Except the leader of the UNP team for Kurunegala District Gamini Jayawickrama Perera, all the other 18 members have taken oaths.

Two members of the group, Ashoka Wadigamangawa and P. Abeyratne took oaths voluntarily on December 30 without getting the approval of the party. The UNP after thinking of taking legal action against them decided to give approval for all to take oaths.

The members would take their seats in the Opposition when the council meets in the first week of February 2000.
Out of the 52 seats, the UNP won 19 seats while the ruling party won 30 seats and the JVP 3 seats.
