Sri Lanka - Bangladesh Private Sector ties strengthened

An eleven member business delegation from Bangladesh led by Mr. Abdual Awal Mintoo, President, Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) recently had discussions with their counterparts in Sri Lanka, the Federation of Chambers of Commerce & Industry of Sri Lanka (FCCISL). At this meeting, a number of bilateral issues that are of concerned to the two private sectors were discussed.

     Mr. Mintoo stressed on the importance of operating direct flights between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. He said this was a pre - requisite for improving bilateral commercial and economic ties between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Mr. Mintoo also stated that the FBCCI was keen to see Bangladesh and Sri Lanka entering into a Free Trade Agreement (FTA). He was of the opinion that such agreement will boost two-way trade between the two countries and result in increased trade, investment and shipping volumes between the two countries. He was of the view that potential business opportunities between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have not been exploited.

     The two presidents also discussed the current positions of the chamber movements and regulations governing chamber movements of the two countries. Mr. Mintoo said that all regulations pertaining to chamber movement are governed by Trade Organisations Act of Bangladesh. He said that FBCCI could assist FCCISL in its efforts of strengthening the chamber movement in Sri Lanka.
