Buddhist clergy against Norway's involvement in peace effort [06 Mar 2000] Leaders of the Buddhist clergy opposed against the government's constitutional reforms and Norway's involvement in the peace effort for a negotiated settlement of the ethnic conflict. The chief monks and some religious organisations have decided to send petition to the government, expressing their opposition to the proposed moves. These protests were made at a meeting presided over by the Mahanayake of the Malwatte chapter, the Ven. Rambukwelle Sri Vipassi Thera. At the meeting the government was accused of adding provisions to the 1997 draft based on demands made by Tamil parties and said that these would be damaging to the Sinhala people. The Speakers at the meeting also opposed to Norwegian involvement in solving the conflict because they believe Norway was supporting the LTTE. However, government sources said that in order to give a fair hearing to the minorities, the draft constitution was amended after lengthy discussions with both the Muslims and the Tamils keeping the place of the majority Sinhalese. Norway was chosen because of their wide experience in providing assistance for such internal conflicts, political sources said. Norway, has also provided assistance to the Guatemala's civil conflict. It has also played a similar role between Israelis and Palestine Liberation Organisation, which resulted in the historic Oslo peace accords.
