Army deserters given another chance
[09 Mar 2000]
The Sri Lanka Army yesterday called upon all the army deserters to report to their camps
as they still have chances to report for duty as 'absentees without leave'.
According to the Army spokesman those deserters who have courage to come back as
'absentees without leave' would be subjected to lesser punishment than the deserters
apprehended by the Military Police.
By yesterday afternoon 4,369 deserters have comeback responding to the general amnesty
given for them to report for duty and also due to the reduced punishments.
An islandwide operating has been launched by the Military Police with the assistance of
the Police to apprehend deserters who have not reported back.
Meanwhile, the number new recruits to the Army has also increased to 1,530 by yesterday as
a result of the youth's positive response to the request by the Army.
