However, it is clear from President Kumaartunga's message that the government has not withdrawn its extended hand for peace even with the escalating malicious attacks of the Tigers against the government and the people to dishearten the peace process.

[13 Mar 2000]

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, in an interview over a state television program on Saturday said that the government's aim is to establish talks with the LTTE to end the war.

"Peace is in the hearts and minds of every citizen of this country, irrespective of the ethnicity that he or she belongs to. The government has attempted its utmost to establish a cease-fire in consultation with the LTTE for the last two and a half years. But they were unwilling to do so up to now" President Kumaratunga said.

She also explained that the government would have to continue the war if the negotiations with the LTTE do not end successfully.

President Kumaratunga also revealed that both local and expatriate minorities along with the Tamil people wrote confidential letters to her personally abhorring the carnage.

Meanwhile, with the fall of the Norwegian government, various comments had been expressed regarding Sri Lanka's peace effort with the assistance of the Norwegian government.

However, it is clear from President Kumaartunga's message that the government has not withdrawn its extended hand for peace even with the escalating malicious attacks of the Tigers against the government and the people to dishearten the peace process.
