Govt delegation to negotiate release of POWs

A government envoy is to go to the Wanni area as directed by President Kumaratunga, and negotiate with the LTTE for the release of eleven prisoners who have warned the governemnt that they would resume with their hunger strike on Wednesday if the government did not take action to facilitate their release.

Four other military prisoners were released recently after family members visited them along with an ICRC representative.

An LTTE spokesman had expressed their willingness to hold talks with a government representative to negotiate the release of the others who had been held for more than seven years.
