"The whole world must recognise the brutality of the Tigers who are trying to portray a different picture. If they are the voice of the Tamil people, why are they backing further and further away from the government's extended hand for peace?"- Political observer said.

Human Rights groups condemns Tiger attack on civilians

[13 Mar 2000]

Human Rights groups including Amnesty International has condemned the indiscriminate shooting by LTTE terrorists of civilians caught in busy traffic, when the terrorists were fleeing after a failed attack on Friday evening.

The civilians were killed while members of the LTTE armed with rocket-propelled grenades, shot indiscriminately at innocent civilians in vehicles and by-standers.

"Under international humanitarian standards, all parties to a conflict must refrain from direct attacks on civilians or indiscriminate attacks and are obliged to take all necessary measures to prevent civilian casualties," Amnesty International said.

Political observers condemning brutality of the LTTE said that the Tigers' selfish motives were finally revealed when the government is trying hard to get them to the negotiating table to arrive at a solution for the on-going ethnic solution.

"The whole world must recognise the brutality of the Tigers who are trying to portray a different picture. If they are the voice of the Tamil people, why are they backing further and further away from the government's extended hand for peace?"
